Q1 What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)?
A1 Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlargement
of the prostate gland that occurs when the cells of the
prostate gland begin to multiply. BPH typically starts
after the age of forty, with the incidence increasing
to approximately half of all men by age 50, and 80%
at the age of 80.1
Q2 What causes an enlarged prostate?
A2 The exact cause of BPH is still unknown, but it is believed
to be linked to hormonal changes in men as they get older.
The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase metabolizes testosterone
into the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which
stimulates the growth of the prostate causing it to become
enlarged.2
Q3 What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
A3 An enlarged prostate gland is thought to interfere with
bladder function and to cause urination difficulties because
it presses on and partially blocks the urethra. Symptoms
of BPH may include a frequent urge to urinate during the
day and especially at night; a difficult-starting flow; dribbling
and difficulty stopping flow and feeling that the bladder has
not been emptied fully.
Q4 How can this formula help?
A4 Saw palmetto is traditionally used for urination difficulties
and prostate health. Studies have shown that saw palmetto
can inhibit the binding of DHT and testosterone to receptors,
and help decrease DHT levels by as much 32% after 6
months.9,10 This may help reduce the size of the prostate
and improve urinary flow.
Saw palmetto also has antispasmodic properties, which
may improve urinary flow symptoms in BPH.3-5,8
It is believed that low zinc levels play a role in the
development of BPH. Research has shown that those with
BPH have a 61% decrease in mean tissue zinc levels and
that zinc supplementation could be beneficial.6
Clinical studies have shown that a combination of selenium,
lycopene and saw palmetto was more effective to decrease
the size and weight of the prostate than saw palmetto on
its own.7
Urtica dioica (Stingy Nettle) and Panax Ginseng have been
shown to help reduce an enlarged prostate,11-13,16,17 while
Grape Seed Extract can have a beneficial effect on the
prostate as well.14,15
